‘Cunt’ has a long history of abuse, though the standard terms ‘vagina’ and ‘pudendum’ themselves are far from neutral. ‘Pudendum’ is derived from the Latin ‘pudere’, meaning ‘to be ashamed’, thus ‘pudendum’ describes the vagina as a shameful organ. ‘Vagina’ is Latin for ‘sheath’, ‘scabbard’, and ‘quiver’, protective coverings into which one slides swords or arrows, and is thus closely linked to pejorative conceptions of sex as a violent, male stabbing act: “In fact, “vagina” is the nastiest kind of name for the female genitalia […] There is more to the female sex than accommodation of a male weapon” (Germaine Greer, 2002). The German equivalent is even more demeaning: ‘Schamscheide’ (‘vagina’) translates literally as ‘sheath of shame’.

When men use the word ‘cunt’ to insult women, courts have deemed the act to be unlawful. When men use it to insult other men, as Julia Penelope demonstrates, their usage is still inherently insulting to women: “[words] used by men to insult other men, motherfucker, son-of-a-bitch, bastard, sissy, and cunt insult men because they’re female words” (1990). ‘Cunt’ insults men because it acts as a verbal castration, removing their masculinity by denying them their penis, implying that having a cunt is inferior to having a cock: Signe Hammer explained that to call a man a ‘cunt’ “is to call him a woman: castrated” (1977).

Specifically, the status and deployment of ‘cunt’ as “The worst name anyone can be called [and] the most degrading epithet” (Germaine Greer, 1970[a]), and especially as the worst name a woman can be called, serves to reinforce the tradition of cultural patriarchy, as Jane Mills points out: “the use of ‘cunt’ as the worst swearword that anyone can think of says a great deal about misogyny in our society, and I think it reveals fear, disgust, and also [a] denial of female sexuality” (Kerry Richardson, 1994). Joan Smith agrees: “It is impossible not to make a link, as lexicographers and feminist writers have done, between the […] decline [of ‘cunt’] into obscenity and illegality, and fearful attitudes towards women and their sexuality” (1998).

Been hunting around on the ‘net, can’t remember how I came to it, but was reading the Wiki entry on Cunt. Which is absolutely fascinating.

Rape culture alive and well in Australia

This one has been stewing in the back of my mind for a few days now. The other night I was up late and happened to be watching the ABC late news. Karen Middleton, their erstwhile political reporter, came on screen and told us about the Parliamentary Midwinter ball, at which one Tony Scrinis had wandered around sexually harrassing women. Karen looked quite non-plussed, the first time I’ve seen such a thing from her. Since then, I haven’t seen her at all… Instead there’s some other bloke who hasn’t been on before… No doubt there’s a reasonable explanation for that.

But I digress. What really gave my obstreperal lobe a case of acute feminitis was the fact that the boss of this staffer, Sophie Mirabella, immediately denied that he would have done it.

Now this, girls and boys, is one of the primary problems with rape culture. Denial of the abuse of women by men. The idea that men have a right to help themselves to women’s bodies and if women don’t like it, they’re called liars or beaten up for their trouble.

Note also the article’s focus on whether Sophie Mirabella is suitable for her portfolio and criticisms by Tania Plibersek that she isn’t… Omission of any criticism of the activities of the man in question.

Opposition frontbencher Tony Smith has told Channel Ten says that is ridiculous.

“Yesterday I saw you calling for action on the staffer, the staffer is no longer employed,” he said.

“He behaved appallingly, everyone acknowledges that, and within the day, he had ceased employment.”

In otherwords he lost his job for getting caught. Where’s the indictment? Where’s the police investigation? Where’s the judgment and rejection other than a piss-weak “it was appalling”?

It’s like something out of one of those hideous crime shows where any woman who claims rape and is still alive is portrayed as a liar, and the only genuine victims are those who show up dead and hideously mutilated. Imagine the subtle effect this would have on jurors, police and judges if they watched a couple of hours of this crap every week before having to be involved in a rape case.

“He wouldn’t have done that.” = “Those lying bitches deserve to be treated like meat.”

It also serves to keep other women quiet about abuses they’ve suffered at the hands of men. Not to mention the psychological damage it does to men, to preserve the destructive gender roles that support rape culture.

Such denial is commonplace in Australian culture as well as the global fungus we import from the US. Shortly after Ms Mirabella’s staff member decided to drunkenly grope a number of women at a Parliamentary ball, a woman in South Australia won a sexual harrassment case.

Ms Poniatowska was awarded $466,000 plus costs, which her lawyer believes is the highest awarded for such a case in Australia.

“I am very happy, not only for myself but for all people who are being harassed at workplaces,” Ms Poniatowska said outside court.

“I would strongly recommend not being afraid to stand up for their rights.

Is it my imagination or does the description of the compensation as “huge” imply that it is undeserved?

Notice the conclusion, however. The last word…

The company said in a statement it contested the claim because “to take any other course of action would have been wrong”.

It says it will lodge an appeal against the decision.

Ah huh. She should shut up like a good little cunt and put up with abuse at work by *four* men… Didn’t she get the memo that the sex class are expected to say nothing and look pretty?

How is it wrong to admit to something you’ve stuffed up over? How is it wrong to admit that you’ve been a complete misogynist pig and need counselling probably for fucking years? Someone should give these Hickinbotham creeps a memo of their own: It’s the 21st century and regardless of ten years of Howard’s conservative christian patriarchal abuses, women are in fact human.

Jesus tapdancing Christ, are we ever going to get out of this goddamned locker room?

Sex-crime reporting criminal.

It’s been a good day for those who get off on sado-masochistic sex and paedophilia. There are three stories in the papers in this regard.

Man on 225 sex related charges. Man jailed for luring teenager for sex. ‘Narcissist’ pedophile sent to jail.

We seem to have a veritable plague of stories about men who drug, manipulate or coerce women and children into sex. And they’re not even footballers. The sentences add insult to injury. 4 years for possessing child pornography and attempting to seduce a child for sex. A man convicted of kidnapping and raping a 5 and a 7 year old was sentenced to 15 years and 13 years consecutively. The excremental fiend who drugged and raped at least 13 women is yet to be sentenced.

This is horrific. Given the links between porn, religion, advertising and people’s attitudes to sex and others’ bodies, why are we not altering the images projected in our society? It’s not as if it should require a law to be passed. Surely anyone with a brain can recognise that it’s a bad thing for men to rape little children and therefore make some alterations in media and advertising to reduce the sexualisation of children. Are we really so screwed up as a community that multi-national conglomerates can continue to value profit over the welfare of human life? Oh, wait… forget I asked. That’s being really too idealistic, isn’t it. I mean, fancy expecting human adults to consider the welfare of children in any way, shape or form. That’s only a subject for media propaganda on the law & order platform during elections, isn’t it?

The very same media who bombard lounge dwelling viewers with hysterical over-reactions to say, cars breaking the 40k speed limit in school zones and children having access to the ‘nets quite happily screen advertisments of young teenage girls dancing provocatively in their underwear. Every night there are hundreds of ads for “girls gone wild” younger and younger women and girls revealing their bodies in video that can be downloaded onto a mobile phone…

For some reason there’s a complete failure to connect the images and attitudes people are exposed to overtly and subliminally with the continuing increase in abuse of women and children.

Consider these three articles as an example. The crimes and the way in which they are committed are reported in stomach churning detail. Even the paedophile’s threats to the little girl are reported shamelessly. The perpetrator is described as narcissistic and maladjusted, which is possibly as close as can be printed to “smegma snorkelling fucktard child rapist” without risking a law suit from said rapist.

Even where the men involved are specified as the agents of these crimes, even where the survivors reactions and their feelings are the main subject of the stories, the manner in which the crimes’ details are explained, at length, in detailed delight, reduces the women and children involved to mere actors in another Australian home grown porno. What a complete and utter disgrace.

Karen Hissane and Kate Hagan have made an effort in the first story to communicate to the reader the suffering of the women, perhaps to engage the sympathy of the readers for those who were drugged and raped by this no-hoper sick pile of dog-vomit man, yet the underlying implicit psychological threat remains in tact. Every woman who reads this is aware that any man can do this. To them. According to the article, possibly even without their knowledge. Any man reading this is aware that he could do this to any woman. The article even tells them what drug to use. The power imbalance in the patriarchy and the domination of the male over sex-caste females is reinforced yet again.

Perhaps this is why the judges’ condemnation of the perpetrators and their heinous activities rings so hollow? These men are singled out, tried and convicted for crimes that in a civilised society should be unthinkable, yet what’s really happening is the scapegoating of a few individuals for what is a society wide continual criminal abuse and enforcement of sex-caste brutality upon Australian women and children. These guys are really only the very few in the brown-shirt front line of the perpetuation of sex class society. They’re the ones who got caught.

Millions of other men are daily beating, raping and threatening women who are coerced into refraining from reporting the abuse or who are psychologically subjugated enough to internalise the violence and blame themselves for it.

These crimes are merely the tip of the iceberg of patriarchal abuse that weighs around the neck of every woman alive. The real crime is the continuing enforcement of the woman hating sado-state through every media outlet and social representation. Jesus tapdancing christ, it’s the 21st century, can we make any changes at all in the interests of the welfare of the planet and any humans on it?

A crack in the ice.

In Sydney today five people have been charged for bringing women to Australia and keeping them captive in a brothel.

The paper uses the disgusting term “sex-slave” to describe what these women went through, after they’d been “imported”. As if they were bathroom fittings.

Federal Police officers raided six inner-Sydney properties yesterday, arresting three women and two men allegedly linked to a sex trafficking syndicate worth more than $3 million a year.

And that’s supposedly why it happens. People can make money out of the misery of others. Then the reporters come along and drool all over it. No doubt when some misogynist enforcement agency such as Channel Ten get hold of it the story will degenerate into something like a script for a cheap and nasty porno flick. Business at sleazy inner city massage parlours will boom with all this free advertising.

As it is, this situation raises all sorts of issues about the satus of women in Australia. Why do men pay for sex? Why are women forced into circumstances where it is their best financial option to sell their bodies? Why do we still live according to Victorian era hypocrisy that forces women into servitude either as wives, wage slaves or virtual toilets for some greasy lecher to grope and masturbate into?

Of course religious people condemn the women involved, since patriarchal religion teaches that it’s the woman’s fault for being the very doorway through which hell enters the world, (rather than the puritan minister’s imagination) and fail to see that their world view perpetuates the aubse of women. It would have us remain as secondary creatures useful only for sex or domestic servitude, to be owned and controlled by men. Religious denigration of women is the horse shit that fertilises the ground from which pornography and sexual abuse of women grows.

If you see a female human as fully human and a peer being with equal value as a human, then you need to begin to respect her views and her person. Religion, and business, are very good at saying they do this while doing the opposite.

Seriously people, it’s the 21st fucking century. Can we begin to live less like retarded, angry animals any time soon?

A similar issue came from recent reading for an astrology course I’m doing. In a book about the North nodes and life directions, the author was describing a person with a Taurean North node as having probably been a prostitute or similar in past lives, dependent upon others for their welfare to the point of dissolving all their own personal value and self-worth. The author then went on to say that the Taurean Norths had often experienced abuse in their childhood and that this was a result of karma, for things they’d done in past lives!

How absolutely astounding. How disgusting. How fucking typical. Maybe the woman who wrote it was raised as a Republican in New England or some such? Who knows, but what a stupid, ignorant thing to suggest, that children are responsible in some way for being abused!

While the idea of reincarnation might come from Eastern countries, there’s nothing to say that it’s necessarily superior to Western ideas, particularly when it’s expressed in a manner like that.

That is, however, something both Eastern and Western religions have in common. A way of excusing abusers and blaming victims, typically children and women, for experiences of rape, emotional or sexual abuse. This seems to be another expression of male privilege in patriarchal cultures, that a man who can’t control himself is given a loophole to excuse himself for being such a perverted beast, and the child or woman whom he has commited these crimes against is left feeling like they were somehow responsible. Where the Catholics or Pentecostals might use the idea of sin, the fallen nature or the devil as a way of excusing a man who has raped a woman or child by implying that he was tempted, as if that makes it all alright, some Hindu and Buddhist beliefs can be similarly warped to serve the same purposes.

While few religious teachers these days would come out openly and say clearly that abused children deserved it, the subtle and treacherous mix of cultural understandings, social values including male privilege and the religious lie that women exist for the service and sexual service of men perpetuates the suffering and misery of millions of people world wide.

It is particularly horrific to see such ideas being promoted in a “new age” field such as astrology and in a book that may be used by students to inform other people of their star charts and perhaps life scripts and directions. This is like something out of the dark ages. It has been obvious for some time that the US is hell bent on creating a class society at the expense of the majority of people, in their so called capitalist society, but to teach that people’s past lives create a situation in which they deserve to be abused is ignorant in the extreme. This is the new age equivalent of creationism.

Apparently right wing religious nut cases aren’t the only ones who employ their spiritual beliefs to support vicious and destructive prespectives.

One can only hope that readers of such information will have the clarity to read with a grain or two of salt.
