Australia’s shame. Rudd’s neglect.

Further in my series of discontent. This morning I happened across an article in The Australian about a family in crisis. Well, not only is the family in crisis, the State’s child welfare system is an appalling mess.

…eight children living in a three-bedroom house with mice and rubbish in every room.

Four had disabilities: some couldn’t hear properly; some couldn’t walk properly; all were malnourished and had head lice. Several had broken bones, and none could use a knife and fork.

Their mother, a young Sunni Muslim woman, veiled from head to toe, found caring for the children impossible, especially as the older ones grew wilder, and then violent. Her husband, an Iraqi, is believed to have at least two other women he refers to as his “wives” and they, too, have children.

He moves between their different houses. None had paid work.

The NSW Department of Community Services has known of the situation for years; and has surely also known that it was a disaster waiting to happen.

And if you think it’s only the NSW system that’s a disaster, Victoria’s was found to be introducing pre-teen children to drugs and prostitution.

Let’s ignore for a moment the implicit criticism of the mother for being a veiled Muslim, particularly since the article goes on to comment on one foster mother who came to the rescue who took veils off the young girls… Who gives a rats what they wear on their heads if we’re talking about a situation of domestic disaster? Is it only Muslims who have trouble raising kids? It would be interesting to see the comparative stats on white, Christian families who are in crisis. Considering the Government is funding religious schools who train children in the psychopathology of conservative christianism, there’s probably shit loads.

The point is this. The Rudd Government actively discriminates against women and children seeking to leave situations like this. Kevin Rudd denies adequate support for women who are single mothers trying their hardest to provide for their children. He has maintained the bias against women of the Howard Liberal Government and is apparently in denial that he hates women.

Surely if you were in a position to do something about a situation like this, about many, many other people in similar circumstances in Australia right now, you would do something constructive. If you were in a situation to address terrible injustices that had been done previously and make things easier for people to keep their heads above water, you would do so. Yet our Prime Minister, who has been on occasion found drunk in a stripper bar and reprimanded for manhandling the dancers, is too busy criticising a celebrity chef over his abuse of a TV host, to bother addressing one of the worst, most hideous cases of discrimination against women and children in the developed world.

And to make matters worse, not only does Kevin Rudd actively discriminate against women and children who’ve had to leave violent, dangerous, demeaning or otherwise unnaceptable domestic circumstances, he neglects to support families struggling to support children through high school. While having made apparently non-core promises about improving education and enabling children to further their education, support of families ends when a child turns 16, just when they hit the hardest, most expensive school years. He’s also planning to make further changes to welfare law to make it harder for children without jobs to claim any form of welfare. Why on earth, in times when jobs are supposed to be getting harder to come by, would you put pressure on children to leave school and look for work, to compete for jobs with other employees when they could be staying in school and improving their education? And why, if we’re having so much trouble looking after the children who are here, would you be paying a baby bonus to encourage people to have more? (Not to mention there’s already 6 billion people on the planet!)

The fact that the State Governments are responsible for foster care systems does not distract from the Federal Government’s discrimination against single parents. While the children referred to in that article have been living in such dreadful suffering, what has the State Government been doing? Pointing the finger at bikers in an attempt to get re-elected on a law and order platform. Scapegoating bastards.

These are only two of the current hypocrisies of the Rudd Government. And if you think the Liberals would be any better, consider that they created this disgusting, exploitative situation in which we now find ourselves. Why on earth can we not vote for someone who doesn’t hate the poor? Why do the two major parties continue to use people who’ve fallen on hard times and those who are struggling as political footballs to earn themselves points for re-election?

How did Australians become such bastards?

The trouble with saving the world.

Well after a busy (and dry) few months I’ve finally fixed up the garden for winter veggies and taken the time to return to my blog. In this post the two are connected… ;-)

My son likes those little tins of flavoured tuna, okay, I confess I like them too. I only buy them when they’re marked down, partially because they’re way over priced and partially because it’s such a consumerist hay maker. Not that I don’t sympathise with people who work such long hours they have no time to make their own salsa… but like Australian wool spun in China and then shipped back to Aus, like little plastic disposable toys for kids’ takeaway “meals”, shipping thousands of tiny tins of tuna and onion around the place is decidedly unfriendly. Those little tins, like the one inch high dollies you step on in the middle of the night on the way to the loo, are symbols of everything that’s wrong with our current thinking.

We can eat well out of the veggie garden when it’s producing summer salads or winter soups. It’s local, no pollution involved in trucking stuff anywhere, no pesticides or toxins and no by-catch or antibiotics or animal cruelty (apart from throwing stones at the cats). Eating what you grow yourself is “friendly” in many ways.

But tinned fish is not primarily unfriendly to the environment. That’s one of two points I’d like to make here. This anti-greenhouse “thing” is not about saving the planet. The earth has geological ages to recover from the predations of humans. What we’re talking about is saving our own hides from poisoning and starvation. Yes it’s a crying shame that we’re taking so many species with us in our greed and stupidity, but let’s be honest. Evolution will step in again when we’re gone. Life of some sort will continue quite happily without us.

We need some deep and fundamental changes to the way global business and trade are conducted. The real problem with the climate change debate is not the computer modelling or voting for the right politician. It’s that the media are controlling it. While ever vested interests are trying to maintain their own advertising budgets at the same time as whipping up anger and hysteria, while backing their own horse for political races… you get the picture. Topics which are fundamental to the necessary change in thinking are being deliberately obscured in favour of blatant hypocrisy and continued advertising. Buying new light globes will save the world… kind of thing.

Back to the tin cans, car culture is a perfect example of this point. The internal combustion engine is essentially 17th century technology. Take a bit of fuel, take a cylinder… The result is one of the most inefficient and polluting modes of transport ever devised. So what do we do? Give one to everyone. Allow me to explain. Most of what has happened in the last couple of hundred years with private transport is advertising. A culture has grown up around the psychology embedded in images of freedom, independence, power and wealth, not to mention the pussy magnet, that fill pages and pages of newspapers and magazines. We are taught to think in terms of having access to these vehicles and requiring square miles of tarmac upon which to drive them. Traffic jams, air pollution and rusted out old car bodies are part of the landscape.

Yet everyone is pretty well aware of the amount of pollution produced not only in the emissions of cars but in their production and destruction. You can drive a well maintained old car for 25 years and not create the same amount of pollution that is generated rolling one new car off the production line. Internal combustion is so inefficient that in a car only about 1% of the energy produced is actually reaching the wheels and pushing you forward. For some reason we’re still buying thousands of the things every year. Why? Advertising. Status. Insecurity. Who makes money from these things? The media and car manufacturers. This is why “greenfleet” is so much bullshit. It’s disguising the problem, not solving it.

In order to reverse some of the destruction that is occurring around us, the human race needs to make some really smart moves like ditching cars in favour of bicycles or public transport and changing the way we think of movement and plan cities. There are plenty of other options for transport but they’re yet to be developed properly. Motorcycles and the Carver are two, though they’re still internal combustion engines. How about two or three wheeled bikes with electric motors that can be charged from your home solar panels? (How about home solar panels while we’re at it!)

But it’s all about consumerism. Consumerism and growth. Growth is another problematic concept. The idea of economic growth is essentially 18th century colonialism. Back in the 17th and 18th centuries the world was a big place and rich white boys from all over Europe could take off in ships around the globe, meeting new people, enslaving them, raping and pillaging and making a fortune from the profits. Just like the Romans, Hittites and everyone else but with puritan christendom, tall ships and guns.

These days the world is not a big place. There are somewhere around 6 billion people on the planet and we’re building houses on the arable land that could otherwise support us. We’re using technology and ideas that are hundreds of years old and in the process wrecking the place for ourselves.

The changes that need to occur in the way we think, the way we do business and the way we live our lives are broad and profound. It will be enormously productive for those who have the ingenuity and bravery to take the necessary steps. The problem is that there are too many snouts in the trough. The ethical and psychological shift that needs to happen in the next few years is immense, but those in control of the discussion are turning it into a useless debate on the thin surface of social norms. Rather than addressing the real underlying issues, this is merely perpetuating the thinking of old fashioned growth and consumerism. And it’s for the benefit of board members at the expense of the rest of us.

Using the example of car culture, here’s why. Buying and selling of cars, manufacture of car related by products and passing of car related laws are all deeply embedded in Western culture. We elect governments based on promises of new roads or road laws. We buy papers on the basis of looking for a new car or a fantastic car crash that killed a dozen teenagers. We think in deeply entrenched stereotypes about people who oppose construction of roads. We think in different but equally entrenched ways about people who drive nice cars and update them regularly. These things occur on a day to day basis without us even being consciously aware of them. Our identities, politics and attitudes are wound up in the image that manufacturers and advertisers have constructed about cars.

Further, changing to hybrid, hydrogen or other energy forms doesn’t improve the situation. There’s more pollution generated by construction of hybrid cars than the current oil guzzlers. There’s still way too much asphalt on the earth and far too much consumerism on the periphery. Making another car isn’t going to help. What we need is an alternative to a car… An alternative to the kind of thinking that drives us to want a nicer car, pass a better law, put new seat covers in or vote for someone to build a bypass.

So you see what I mean. To change all that is a seriously *big* effort and yet if we are to avoid self-destruction this is what needs changing. How can the media, who are the vehicle of all this destructive behaviour, possibly conduct or contribute to a discussion about fixing it? That would be biting the hand that feeds them. It would be shooting themselves in the feet. How can the politicians, who are hand in hand with the media voices who elected them, legislate to ban car advertising, fund serious research into useful alternatives or promote the sociological shift that could help?

You know what? If you really want to save the world, stop buying papers and magazines and stop watching private media tellie. Like the culture jammers say… “Don’t buy it”. Drive a well maintained old car. Buy locally made. You know all this, yes? The catch is, what are you thinking? Does consumerism have a grip on how you see yourself and how you present yourself to others? How deeply affected are you by society’s standards and stereotypes?

Well, it’s a little trite but that’s part of the point I’m trying to make. We’re on the wrong track trying to solve this hassle if we’re getting our information from the tv news or unable to criticise advertising influences. Filtering your social context and adding some helpful voices in your inner dialogue is a good move. So is interaction with smart people. University faculties are full of them. The Internet likewise is a medium for discussion and ideas.

The point I’m making is that we need open minds about where we’re going. It’s like any dysfunction. It might take years to resolve, but the moment you say to yourself, “you know what? I do want to change this.” Then things can begin to happen.

Most of us no longer think of ourselves as the pinnacle of evolution or the ‘purpose’ of god’s creation. Many of us realise that humans are an animal species. We’re simply one more part of life on earth. We’re beginning to get the idea that we need to participate respectfully and intelligently in the life of the planet. The cosmos is not a pyramid hierarchy with rich white aristocrats at the top, which was the kind of thinking that gave us colonialism by the way. Life is a web. An interactive matrix. We understand that we’re connected and that this is the only planet we have. *That* is the solution. Make it a mantra. Make it an affirmation. Write it in lipstick on the bathroom mirror if you like. I’m an animal and I live on the earth with all the other animals. It’s about living, breathing and enjoying your life. It’s about your life in connection with the lives of others, human or otherwise, not what colour your steering wheel cover is.

The lunatic world of commodities prices.

On the SBS news last night there was a story about another impending round of petrol price rises. The story was that a journalist in Israel had printed something about not liking Iran, so petrol speculators had a bit of a fit. Something to do with the US not being happy with the results in Iraq and eyeing off Iran… “Saw the lights on, thought we’d drop in while we’re over this way…”

In the papers the impending rises were being blamed on Asia and the US recession. Heh, fancy anyone outside of Anglo culture wanting their share of the world’s resources. Next thing we know the Africans will be wanting food. What’s the world coming to? Soon we might have to stop taking produce on boats on laps around the planet to get to other countries that produce the same food, in order to meet “free trade agreements”.

Well, last week the petrol price was supposedly down. Again because of Asia. However that was apparently not good news because any reduction in numbers could look like a “negative impact on the global economy” and that isn’t good because nobody who’s part of the huge consensual hallucination of kleptocrats who sustain the planet pillaging wants to be thinking about their own little collection of stock numbers reducing, even if it’s to reflect anything remotely like reality.

While the petrol prices “eased” in trading, there was no corresponding drop in petrol prices at the pumps. What a surprise. I can see you all holding your heads. What, no reality in petrol pricing? What is the world coming to! This week though some of you astute readers will have noticed that some of the face-hugging conglomerate thieves that pass for supermarkets in Australia are offering a deal 20 cents per litre off when you buy half a dozen bottles of grog. Hmmm. 10 cents per litre off if you spend more than $50 in the shop. Wow. You’ll need the grog to understand the system.

What this means is that although every dollar increase in crude prices is alleged to translate (or has been fabricated to reflect) a cent per litre increase in the price at the pump, the price is already 10 to 20 cents over priced and the big boys holding the cards are reaping windfall profits both ways. One because their stocks are worth more and they’re able to control more politics and social values while their commodities (bits of the planet they’ve dug up and are poisoning everyone with) that they’re holding the planet to ransom with are, well, effective and powerful. Two because they’re able to make more money and pay less tax. I dunno what they’re going to spend all this money on when there’s no air left to breathe. Tanked air, perhaps?

This is the same planet on which farmers in rich countries being paid massive subsidies and produce less food in order to keep prices high is spoken of as an economic necessity and part of the level playing field in this lunacy that is globalism.

But it’s not all bad news. There’s less cars on the road which means a reduction in car exhaust related illnesses and accidents. The flow on is that petrol isn’t so important to those drivers at least, and cars aren’t either. This is a good thing so far as reality is concerned. Real reality I mean, not the BS that advertisers and speculators would pretend to be involved in. Not the supposed reality that is a mere hangover of Victorian class-society and the industrial revolution inherited in a thought-free board room. This is reality for awake people.

And car parts manufacturers are beginning to rethink. Last week an auto parts retailer bought a bicycle manufacturer and this week another one is selling out.

Eventually at some point this whole elaborate soap opera that is Western civilisation (cough) will wake up face down in a swamp of its own effluent and wonder what the fsck happened. Eventually. If the people who concocted advertising as a tax deduction put their minds to something useful we’d be carrying portable solar chargers for every bloody thing by now. Houses would have rain water, grey water and 150% solar capacity. Coal and petrol would be a thing of the past. Which they will soon, but without taking half the planets bio capacity with it.

In the meantime, it was earth day last week and I patted myself on the back for leaving the car in the garage most of the week and pedalling around.

So while I might be feeling a little like a mental case presently, at the very least I feel much, much more sane than anyone involved in the global economy.

Lay off Amy Winehouse.

At a Sunday bike fix not long ago Val had some music playing on his bike’s loudspeakers. It’s a setup with an old car amp and speakers on panniers on the back of the bike running off an ipod. Kinda dinky.

A song came on with the most beautiful smokey blues voice and I asked him who was singing. Sure enough it was Amy Winehouse singing “Back to black” from her latest album. I was very impressed. I had no idea quite how good she is.

The discussion came up about her supposed drug use. Fancy that, a musician doing drugs. What will the world come to! ;-) Of course, when you think about it drug use has sometimes seemed almost mandatory for anyone in the arts and music scene. Before there was heroin and tablets there was always wine, hash and opium. For many thousands of years these things were available legally.

It is no coincidence that opiate drugs work so well because they fit the endorphin receptors in the human brain. How many thousands of years were these plants cultivated by humans for exactly that purpose?

A large part of the complaint about Ms Winehouse came from the US trash media. I’m beginning to wonder if it wasn’t because they’re jealous of her talent. The US media seem to think they’re the whole point of evolution and planetary development sometimes.

Not to mention inventing the war on drugs. Using “save the children” (TM) as a cover, in spite of the drugs industry in the US being second only to petrochemicals as a money spinner and many large drug companies being based in Texas… conservative politicians have created a you-beaut-wonderful straw man to use as a whipping boy to distract punters every time another one of them gets busted for snorting crack and screwing street kids. There isn’t really a war on drugs or the troops in Afghanistan would be helping set up schools and hospitals, not stuck in a penny ante tit for tat with guerillas armed by the Saudis. Same is true in Colombia. They could have had farms growing food, instead the US wanted coffee and coke, so they set about upending South American economies with standover tactics described as free trade agreements.

Aside from all of that, the real problems with illegal drugs are mainly the fact that they’re illegal. If they weren’t brewed up in backyard dunnies and cut with rat poison, we’d have plenty of pills kids could try out safely. Those who are going to get addicted can always get addicted to legal or illegal drugs and at least there’d be some safeguards and harm minimisation in place.

Humans are always going to want to alter their consciousnesses. Hell, we’ve only really had an egotistic “I” conscious self for a few thousand years anyways. Maybe drugs helped trigger this evolution? If Governments really gave a rats arse about the damage done by illegal drugs they would be setting programs in place and ignoring the hysteria in the media. Or at the very least not exploiting it in the name of re-election. How about exploring some of the reasons why kids want to do drugs? How about some limits on the emotional abuse and sexual content of advertising that pushes people over the edge? (And if you think that’s an overstatement consider that advertising is known to affect and alter the physical function of your brain).

In the meantime give Amy a break. The last thing the poor girl needs is to be a scape goat for a slow news week in Hollywood. Heh, the people that castigate her on television look like they’re made of plastic anyway.

Facebook a threat to feminine honour.

It’s taking a little while for this to sink in. Some things that happen in the world are so unspeakable that even though there seems to be one every week, your mind simply doesn’t want to acknowledge them.

H/T to Pharyngula for this link, a woman was beaten and shot dead by her father for talking on Facebook.

(The Pharyngula commentariat have suggested an International Fuck-In Against Religious Bullshit as a response. :-))

Sure this is in Saudi Arabia, where women have less rights than cattle, yet the very thought is so mind bogglingly ghastly the consciousness rebels against acceptance. In a civilised world the man would be charged with murder, most likely to spend a very, very long time in prison/psychiatric care.

The link is to a UK rag, the story has yet to hit here in Aus. It will be interesting to see how it’s presented here considering the way the media presents the ‘nets as the greatest threat to humanity since the plague. The same outlets that plaster semi-naked women’s bodies all over billboards and magazine covers hysterically shriek “save the children, o god, save the children!” whenever electronic communication in households is so much as implied. What remains largely unstated, as in this case, is that what we’re saving the children from is other men.

Why should this be, when so much of the world’s population is supposedly religious and religion is supposedly what gives human beings morals? Shouldn’t all vestiges of paedophilia and abuse have been cured years ago? Apparently not. Supposedly such illegal, destructive and narcissistic behaviour is proof not of the inherent misogyny of religions having made its way into human culture, but that all humans, particulary the women, are faulty. And it’s the fault of women for being so sexy that menfolk simply can’t control their base, evil natures.

Makes you wonder why we didn’t reinvent a worldview where people were encouraged to develop self-esteem and self-control rather than blaming the sex-caste for their own suffering.

In bashing and murdering his daughter, this father is basically exercising his right over her life. No other man can have sex with her or even talk to her over an internet connection, because he has now killed her. To keep his honour in tact. What sort of honour is it, I wonder, that requires child sacrifice? Honour like Abraham or Abraham’s god? Hmmm.

But before this descends into singling out Islam, though the murder took place in Saudi Arabia, one of the US’ closest military allies and a malignant miasma of misogyny, consider that it isn’t only Islam that subjugates and slaughters womankind. Indeed, it was christendom that gave us the doctrine of female subordination in mainstream culture. The church fathers were every bit as unstable and psychopathic as the father in this instance, such woman hating freaks as Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, who denigrated and defiled women, reducing us to mere walking uterii in the service of producing more males for their tantrum throwing deity to send into war or wipe out with plague for their inherent sinfulness… derived from women, of course.

While women in Pakistan are being sentenced to be gang raped for crimes against honour (!!) and women in Saudi Arabia are being killed for looking at a man, other women all over the world are being physically mutilated in the name of religion, women are being sexually, psychologically and financially abused the world over because men’s doctrines defines us as being the (un)worthy target of such abuses.

While church men might wring their hands and despair of the sinfulness of secular culture these days and be appalled at pornography, prostitution, paedophilia, rape and hatred of women, let’s not forget where the fuel and motivation for these ideas began. Religious men, bound by their religion into self-hatred and annihalation by the man made doctrines of sin and hell are not only unable to bear children to bring life into the world, but psychologically unable to beget life giving social contribution. Every creation seemingly positive is inevitably turned around for destruction. The earth, having been tainted with femaleness by the old reference to “mother nature” is also a target for hatred and mutilation. And where did these ideas originate? “Go forth and conquer”.

The original verse in Genesis has been observed to have been mistranslated. The word that is translated as “conquer” or “dominate” in other contexts is read as manage or even tend like a garden… but where it counts, male translators in male dominated cultures chose to create for themselves an excuse to pillage, rape and destroy to their little hearts’ content.

Much as there might be those within religious circles, such as my former Professors at Uni, who strive to correct such imbalances, and well they do otherwise millions of us who were brainwashed might never have any hope of discovering the alternative history of religious and political abuse that resulted in our current global oligarchy of bastardry, the destructive, self-hating, woman-hating nature of the construct is such that it will not change. The nature of the beast, the evil projected upon every perceived enemy of religion is at the very heart thereof and will not be exorcised.

It’s going to take many, many years of therapy for an awful lot of people before anything much changes in this regard. In the meantime, light a candle for the women of Saudi Arabie. And recognise the complicity of Western nations in maintaining the situation there by continuing arms and other trades with the foremost example of woman hating religious psychoses on the planet today.

If anyone knows what the young woman’s name was, I’d love to know. There ought to be a facebook group as legacy for her.

Commiserations and deep sympathy to her mother, sisters and friends.

Speaking of man problems…

Having a brief catch up around some of my favourite blogs, I came across reference to the gang rape of a 10 year old in Queensland, in which all the young male rapists were excused by the Prosecutor for “experimentation”.

In a country where about one in three women are raped or sexually assaulted during their lifetimes, where gang rape and other such criminal, malicious acts of hatred and violence by men are considered male bonding or just the footy team letting off some steam, this really does hit a new low.

Ten years old for f*cks sake!

The Hoydens were as angry and stunned as I am.

The Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, has stood down the Prosecutor and some others who were involved in putting the girl at risk… but it’s a bit too little too late.

Not only that, but the message such a case and the subsequent reportage sends to women and girls in Australia is that it’s somehow acceptable that men treat us like walking toilets that they can jerk off into any time they like, whether we wish to participate or not.

The Queensland Police Commissioner doesn’t seem to think that greater policing of the State’s far north, or protection of vulnerable children, is required.

She was female, and an Aboriginal female at that. An opinion piece about the crime touches on some important points, while managing to avoid venturing into Feminist polemic… As if Feminist polemic is not relevant in this case.

In refusing to single out for punishment grown men who have sex with “skinny” 10-year-olds, Bradley is sending a message that Aborigines are expected to behave like animals.

Her intentions are noble, but the outcome is insidiously racist: the rape of a little black girl becomes less of a crime than the rape of a white one.

Of course, any woman who’s been abused by men knows all about what it’s like to try and get justice, or healing, in this nation.

Many of us who live a life which is a mere relic of sexual and other abuse are angered but not really surprised by any of this. It will be interesting to see how the case of Andrew Bowen resolves. Note that the report of his appearance in court terminates on the note that the maximum penalty for rape is 25 years imprisonment. How many men who rape women serve 25 years in prison, I wonder?

Probably not as many as go to churches where other men in suits, vested in divine authority, rant and rave about the victim’s responsibility to forgive.

And that’s what this is really all about, isn’t it? The persistance of a world view that teaches that women are not as human as men. That we are somehow obliged to provide sex for men, particularly the man who owns us, or buys us. And should we fall pregnant, the offspring of the man in question is of course worth more than the body, life or decision of the pregnant woman. Note how this case is reported focussing on the difficulty navigating Victoria’s abortion laws causes doctors… with little mention of what any woman might desire for her own life. We’re already too conditioned to the misogyny of religious nut-jobs who will vilify any person who even thinks about discussing the idea that a woman should have any ownership of her own body.

It’s the 21st century and still we live in a culture where men as a class are socially defined as superior to women as a class. This disparity is deeply entrenched and still actively, brutally enforced by the putrid troglodytes who use their penises as weapons… and tolerated if not enjoyed by many, many others. That’s why it’s called male privilege.

More misogyny in the USA

Thanks to the kindly Feminist who pointed out that the “Marry my daughter” site was a hoax. Oops! Well, there’s more to it. Apparently the bloke who wrote the site got plenty of “proposals” from eligible bachelors looking to marry girls as young as 13, who could not legally have sex.

Pandagon has some interesting views on the site and other relevant, but unfortunately not hoax, issues in the States.

Likewise Jeff Fecke writes about the problem with “submission” as it is interpreted by religious pedophile freaks.

Having pissed away ten years of my own life in a cult that taught that there’s no such thing as rape in marriage because a woman’s body is the property of her husband, I can understand how these poor girls feel. What’s better is that I also understand the rage they’ll wield when they’re in their thirties and forties and finally get the hell out of there. Which, hopefully, they’ll do very, very soon!

The Happy Feminist considers the battle between conservatives and Feminists, particularly over marriage. Apparently some conservative talking heads are using Andrea Dworkin and others’ comments about marriage to offer the impression that Feminism is horrific. Unfortunately for many women like myself who were involved in churchy marriages, it was all too much like prostitution and abuse. What broke the camel’s back in my own case was realising that “oh my god, I have to fuck this loser to keep a roof over my head”… In those exact words my whole life came into sharp focus and when he threatened to belt me and threw me out, he didn’t have to ask twice!

Thirteen years down the track I’m only now getting back on my feet emotionally. About time, really, but it does kinda get my goat that this is still happening to other, much younger women. Bastards.
